There’s comedy, then there is black comedy. Just like literature, films too have delved into space where taboo subjects are dealt with in a humorous manner. Bollywood too has experimented with some such quirky comedies with dark humour in them.
While some black comedies movies  worked well, some fell flat on its face. Nevertheless, they are always remembered for being hatke. Here are 7 such movies you can watch –


The film was in controversies for its uncountable abuses, vulgarity and supposedly inappropriate scenes. Producer Aamir Khan himself said that the movie was not meant for kids at all. Starring Imran Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Vir Das, the movie was a hit as the script resonated with the viewers, particularly the youth who wanted more such brazen movies exploring the dark side of young, struggling India in metro cities.

Ishqiya –

A power-packed cast with Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi, Ishqiya was lauded both by critics and audiences alike. Two criminals who fall for a widow and ultimately fight among themselves, only to discover they were being used all along. The film is a realistic depiction of desire, revenge and betrayal where the end is left unclear. The film won 4 National Awards and 3 Filmfare Awards.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron –

A marvellous cast and an equally amazing script made this film stand out from most 90s flicks. A satire against corruption, media, corporate and politics, the film had a stellar cast with Amrish Puri, Nseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah and Neena Gupta. A highly underrated film at the time, it was acclaimed and received special praise for the stage dramatization of the Mahabharata, particularly the enactment of the Draupadi Cheer-Haran episode to bring home the point of the film.

7 Khoon Maaf –

This Priyanka Chopra starrer was an adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s short story Susanna`s Seven Husbands. The story is of a femme fatale who murders her seven husbands in her unquenchable thirst for love. The manner in which Susanna kills her 7 husbands, all played by stellar actors, makes it a worthwhile watch. Priyanka Chopra’s superior acting skills landed her acclaim as “the role of a lifetime.”

Dev D –

A Dark comedies of  bollywood of Devdas, the movie was experimentation and brought Abhay Deol to the limelight along with Kalki Koechlin and Mahi Gill. Blatant, immodest, unconventional and at times, bizarre, Dev D set up the trend of dark comedies and was appreciated by both the critics and the audience alike.

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye –

 Another Abhay Deol starrer, the film was based on the real life “Super Chor” Bunty who stole expensive items from elite houses in major cities of India in a unique way puzzling the police. He would do it more for fun than necessity. The movie won a National Award and Abhay Deol was appreciated for his superb acting skills in the movie.


Establishing Saif Ali Khan as an actor worth his merit, this 2018 film deals with larger issues of life, death and karma. The name itself is Marathi slang. A string of narratives put together, the film has, for the first time in Bollywood, depicted a trans person as an important character. Though the film did not create a stir at the box office, it has been regarded as Saif’s best performance till date.
