Sonam Kapoor was educated at the Arya Vidya Mandir School in Juhu. She excelled at sports such as rugby and basketball and trained in Kathak, classical music, and Latin dance. For her pre-university education, Kapoor enrolled at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore where she studied theatre and arts. Later she studied economics and political science through "University of Mumbai" correspondence programme. Then she got an opportunity to be an assistant director of one of the greatest director of the industry "Sanjay Leela Bhansali". She worked with him for his movie "Black". During the production of Black, she developed an interest towards acting. During that time Sanjay Sir told her that he wants her to act for his next movie "Saawariya". But she had weight problem she was suggested to loose wait for her movie. At that time she weighed about 80 kilograms. and after she was suggested she lost her weight 35 kg. That movie was a critical and commercial failure and earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut nomination and the Stardust Award for Superstar of Tomorrow – Female. Then she got her second movie by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra drama Delhi-6. That was opposite Waheeda Rehman and Abhishek Bachchan. It got mixed reviews from critics.
